A water heater with Bitwater inside, heating the water

Bitwater in 40 seconds

Heated by mining Bitcoin.

Bitwater heats your tank with bitcoin-mining chips instead of a resistance wire. Same heat, same electricity, plus bitcoin.

Bitwater heating element
  • MinesChips inside the element hash around the clock.
  • HeatsMining generates heat that goes into heating the water.
  • PaysThe bitcoin is yours. The electricity was spent on hot water anyway.

The miner is built into
the heating element

Inside the Bitwater element: Eco Brass heatsink, mining board with twenty chips, brass base, temperature probe and screw-in head

Efficient mining chips secured by welded Eco Brass heatsinks.

Twenty mining chips sit inside the element, cooled by the water around them.

Eco Brass moves heat fast, resists corrosion and is lead-free — the right metal for a drinking-water tank. Efficient chips take that same energy and maximize the hashrate for you.

THE FIT

Bitwater screwed into the 1-inch NPSM port of an electric water heater
1" NPSMStandard port

Fits your existing
electric water heater.

The same fitting as a regular screw-in element, on any regular US / Canada electric tank. The Bitwater kit comes with the 1-1/2" element wrench for easy installation.Designed for regular 30–80 gallon electric water heaters built to US and Canada standards. It does not work with heat-pump or gas water heaters. If in doubt, reach out to support.

Simple installation

Fits any regular US / Canada electric water heater — no plumbing changes, no new circuit. An easy DIY job.

Up to 600 W, adjusted in real time. Designed to keep the miner running >80% of the time. Autotune shifts between maximum hashrate and best efficiency for optimal performance.

The upper heating element still protects you from running out of hot water if you are a heavy user.

POWERED ANODE PREVENTS CORROSION

REGULARSACRIFICIAL ANODENeeds replacement every 6–24 months
BITWATERPOWERED ANODENever needs replacing

Titanium powered
anode built in.

Every tank has a sacrificial rod that dissolves to protect the steel and has to be swapped every year or two. Bitwater’s anode is a powered titanium rod: it protects with a small current instead of dissolving, works in hard or softened water alike, and stops the rotten-egg smell a magnesium rod can cause.

GENTLE SURFACE TEMPERATURE REDUCES LIMESCALE

A scaled-up regular element next to a clean Bitwater element
REGULARSURFACE ABOVE 212°FWater boils on it, scale bakes on
BITWATERSURFACE ~140–149°FToo cool for scale to stick

Less limescale,
longer tank life.

A regular element pushes all its heat through a small surface that runs hotter than boiling, so the water touching it boils and mineral scale bakes on — fastest in hard-water areas. Bitwater spreads the same heat over a far larger surface, so the element itself stays at 140–149°F: plenty to heat the tank, too cool for limescale to form.

LEAK DETECTION

If your tank ever leaks,
you’ll know early.

Bitwater ships with a leak sensor for the base of the tank. If the probe ever gets wet, the app notifies you and sends an email — at home or a thousand miles away.

Remote monitoring
and app controls

Bitwater is Wi-Fi connected. Monitor and control your Bitwater through the app.

Heatbit app: smart functions

Smart functions in the Heatbit app

Tunes the miner itself

Autotune keeps adjusting frequency and voltage for optimal hashrate and efficiency.

Weekly disinfection cycle

Once a week the tank is heated to 140°F (60°C) and held there, the temperature that kills Legionella bacteria, then drops back to your normal setting. Set-and-forget, and you get a note when it’s done.

Heats during cheap hours

On a day–night or time-of-use tariff, more heating happens overnight when electricity is cheapest. Same hot showers, smaller bill.

Learns your routine

The app notices when you use hot water and has the tank ready before, not after.

FAQ

Will it fit my water heater?
If your tank is a standard US or Canada electric water heater with a screw-in element, yes. Bitwater uses the same 1" NPSM fitting your current element sits in, and suits tanks from 30 to 80 gallons. Gas and heat-pump water heaters are not supported. If in doubt, reach out through the form above and we check for you.
We’ll have something for gas heaters and heat pumps soon.
My tank has two elements.
Which one does Bitwater replace?
The lower one. The upper element and thermostat stay exactly as they are, so the tank behaves normally on heavy draw. One Bitwater per tank is plenty.
Will I still have enough hot water?
Yes. Bitwater puts up to 600 W into the tank continuously, and Autotune shifts power into heat the moment the tank calls for it. Your heater's own upper element and thermostat are untouched, so if the water ever does start running cold they cut in exactly as they always have. We ran the test through winter in New York and Florida with households of four and five people and results have been great. Bitwater fits regular 30–80 gallon electric water heaters built to US and Canada standards; it does not work with heat-pump or gas water heaters.
How much power does it draw?
Up to 600 W — less than a regular 4,500 W element, but running steadily rather than in bursts. Over a day that is the same amount of heat a typical household draws from its tank. Autotune decides moment by moment how much of that power goes to heat and how much to hashrate; you set the water temperature and never think about it.
Will my electricity bill go up?
Heating the water takes the same electricity whether a plain element or Bitwater does it — the hashing happens on the way, not on top of it.
What does 140–149°F refer to? Is my water only that hot?
That is the temperature of the element surface, not of your water. You set the water temperature in the app as before. A regular element has to push all its heat through a small surface, so that surface runs above boiling — which is where scale comes from. Bitwater delivers the same heat through a surface many times larger, so the element itself never gets hotter than 140–149°F: too cool for scale to bake on, and gentler on the tank.
Why is a powered anode better than
the rod already in my tank?
The magnesium or aluminium rod in your tank protects the steel by dissolving, and once it is half gone the tank starts rusting from the inside — which is how most heaters die. Bitwater’s anode is a titanium rod fed a small current: it never wears away, so protection does not fade and there is nothing to inspect or replace. And because it is not magnesium, it cannot feed the bacteria that give hot water a rotten-egg smell.
Is Bitwater patented?
Patent pending. Many aspects of the Bitwater product — its technology and its design — are covered by pending patent applications.
Is it certified?
Bitwater — the element and the support unit together — is built to the necessary standards for the US and Canada and will ship already listed. Everything that touches water is Eco Brass and stainless steel, lead-free to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and compliant with the US Safe Drinking Water Act.
Do I need an electrician
or a plumber?
Bitwater is designed for DIY installation: no piping changes and no new circuits. You should generally know what you are doing when working on a water heater — and we provide paper and video guides for every step. If you would rather have someone on the line, you can book a 1-hour video call with an experienced installer for $99 once your Bitwater arrives.
How long does installation take?
About the same as swapping a normal element — cut the power, drain the water, unscrew the old element, screw Bitwater in, reconnect, and mount the small controller on the side of the tank. Can be done within about 30–45 minutes.
Is it noisy?
No. The water cools the chips directly, so there are no fans and nothing to hear. In fact, it can be quieter than your regular heater, as it doesn’t have the water-boiling noise either.
How much will I actually mine?
Up to 34 TH/s. What that earns depends on network difficulty and the bitcoin price, and anyone quoting you a figure for the year is guessing. The half that does not move is the cost: the electricity was going in anyway, so whatever it mines is on top.
Where does the bitcoin go?
To an address you control. Out of the box Bitwater mines solo on the Heatbit pool, so a block found is yours. Switching to Luxor or any pool of your choice takes a minute in the app.
Does it need to be online?
Only for the mining. Without a connection Bitwater simply works as a heating element and picks up hashing again when the network is back — your hot water never depends on the internet.
Can I control Autotune?
You set the maximum water temperature in the app and Autotune works within it — more hashrate once the tank is up to temperature, more heat the moment it is not. You never have to choose between hot water and mining; that is the job it does for you.
What is the warranty?
One year from the day it ships. If the element fails we replace it — and because it screws in like any other element, you swap it yourself without a plumber or a service call.
What happens after the
one-year warranty?
It keeps working; nothing switches off or expires. If an element ever fails outside warranty, we sell replacements at a fixed price and it swaps in the same way — no plumber, no service call. Firmware and app updates stay free for the life of the product.
Where do you ship?
The US and Canada.
We’ll have something for other countries soon.
Can I get a refund?
Your reservation is refundable under our terms.
When does it ship?
First units go out in Q1 2027.
